Sketch-U-cation

Creating Hidden Lines in Sketch Up:

I'd like to start today's post with a simple tidbit that I discovered while completing a presentation. You might already know this, but i found it extrememly helpful. Have you ever brought a DWG floor plan into Sketch Up and been frustrated with the fact that the program doesnt keep your "dashed or hidden" lines for you? A simple way to remedy this is to place all lines requiring a dashed appearance on a seperate layer in CAD. Once you bring the file into Sketchup, isolate that layer (turn all others off) select all the lines, right click, "hide". Then go to: View > Hidden Geometry. All lines designated as hidden will now be dashed, and will print that way! Or you can just select individual lines, right click, Hide. Peice of Cake. Here is the result:
I found this helpful tip on a website called "Sketch U Cation" this is a fantastic community for all things Sketch Up. I will place a new link to this website under the "links" menu, and here it is as well: http://sketchucation.com/
They also have a page called "The Daily CatchUp" for interested readers (click the image below):

One particular post I found interesting is called "Modeling a Panton Chair with Subdivide and Smooth" this video was the winner of the "Subdivide and Smooth Tutorial Contest" byTakeshi Hashimoto.

Project Vasari

It seems Autodesk realizes the importance of quick 3D modeling for basic conceptual studies and is releasing their version of Sketch Up. Right now it is available for free downloading but from everything Ive seen on the program so far, and the current discussions, very few seem impressed. Granted the software is just taking its first steps, Im of the opinion that Autodesk should concentrate more on improving its own current programs instead of trying to reinvent the wheel that is already Sketch Up. On the positive side there are some interesting attributes of this new modeling program, like sophisticated analysis of energy and carbon (although SU is already making these advances as well) and the easy ability to move your conceptual models from Vasari to Revit (again... SU is doing this as well). So why learn a new program when Sketch Up has made this process so easy for us? Ill let you decide that one....

The Theory of Type.

Click Image or Click Here: http://www.typetheory.com/
As designer's we sometimes forget the importance of TYPE. The size, color, font, placement- all have a dramatic impact on the viewer's impression of our presentations. Type Theory was founded by Ty Wilkins in January of 2009 after he graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design. His website and design work are a GREAT resource for type and graphic inspiration-- I highly recommend taking a look at this website for some font liberation-- Enjoy!

Site Inspire

There has been recent talk of upgrading the STG website, and we were all charged with the task of brainstorming creative possibilities for a facelift. This site is great for doing exactly that. I find myself going back to it whenever I just need some inspiration, ENJOY!

The Colors of the Web

As an integral part of branding, choosing a color or palette that will identify your company for years to come is crucial. In this analysis by ColourLovers, it's interesting to find how primary colors blue and red seem to dominate the market. That said, it is blue with it's cool and calming association that is hands down linked to some of the most profitable technology companies in corporate America, giving the color blue a whole new meaning.

Kuler Color

We are in the process of establishing graphic standards, but there's always that experimental phase when you need a little bit of inspiration or simply a palette that conveys the right message according to your particular project. Thanks to a great tip-off from Jeff Ervin, I've come across Kuler. It's under the Adobe Systems, Inc. umbrella and it's perfect for visual stimuli in times of designer's block.

It's constantly updated with other people's color combinations, but you have the freedom to use that as a starting point and create your own custom color palette. You can then transfer it with RGB, CYMK or even HEX for html color matching. The possibilities are quite literally- endless. Enjoy!

Overnight Rendering Results

Here's our first overnight high-res render. We're still troubleshooting model and lighting issues, but we've at least got the sun, point lights, and cove (IES mesh) lights working here. This was rendered at the highest resolution possible and best photon-mapping option, which yields a large enough image (28 x 21 @ 100 dpi) that it could be a standalone image on our marketing boards. Best of all, the software is stable enough to run overnight with no human babysitting!
